When YB first moved to the United States six years ago with no job, no home, and no help, he faced a seemingly impossible task: to achieve self-sufficiency while raising his high school daughter on his own. After six months at a local shelter, he enrolled in our Transitional Housing Program.
Just two months after starting the program, Community Lodgings assisted him in finding a full time job. Five years later, he is still employed at the career that Community Lodgings helped him secure. YB shared with us that Community Lodgings helped him achieve his most important goal, which was to provide for the education of his daughter, DB. After DB’s graduation from high school, she began taking courses at Northern Virginia Community College, double majoring in criminology and psychology. She was recently accepted to the Women’s College at Notre Dame of Maryland. YB is very grateful for the services Community Lodgings offered him. To summarize his success story, he noted, “To break poverty, it’s not only money but your thinking that makes you move towards success.” With the programs Community Lodgings offers, we can continue to change the way people think about themselves and help them achieve self-sufficiency, just as YB did for himself and his daughter.
