Grant recognizes Community Lodgings’ work strengthening community leadership and expanding opportunity for families in Alexandria.
Community Lodgings is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant from ACT for Alexandria’s Fund for Racial Equity, an initiative dedicated to advancing racial equity and dismantling systemic racism in the Alexandria community. The grant will help support Community Lodgings’ ongoing work to expand educational opportunities, strengthen resident leadership, and increase civic engagement in Alexandria.
Launched in 2021, the Fund for Racial Equity was created with a single goal: to provide a sustainable source of funding for efforts that address systemic racism and promote racial equity in Alexandria. The fund is community-driven and guided by an advisory board that establishes priorities and leads grantmaking decisions. In its inaugural rounds, the fund prioritized investments in organizations working in child welfare, health, housing, and education—key areas that shape opportunity and well-being for Alexandria residents.
Community Lodgings was selected for its ongoing commitment to strengthening community power and expanding opportunities for families and youth, particularly through its work in the Chirilagua-Arlandria neighborhood of the City of Alexandria.
“Recent Fund for Racial Equity grantmaking prioritized organizations growing and supporting community power to build racial equity capacity in Alexandria,” said Shelley Miller, Program Manager at ACT for Alexandria. “Community Lodgings’ sustained efforts to support knowledge building and civic engagement in Chirilagua make them a natural fit for this support.”
For decades, Community Lodgings has worked alongside families in Alexandria to provide stable housing, youth development programs, and adult education opportunities. The organization’s holistic approach supports families as they build pathways to stability, opportunity, and long-term success.
“This recognition from ACT for Alexandria affirms the importance of investing in communities and empowering residents to lead change,” said Lynn Thomas, Executive Director of Community Lodgings. “At Community Lodgings, we believe that strong families and informed, engaged communities are essential to creating lasting equity. This support will help us continue expanding opportunities for youth and families while strengthening community leadership in Chirilagua.”
For more than 20 years, ACT for Alexandria has continued to bring nonprofit organizations, donors and community partners, and resources together to lift the Alexandria community’s voice and create lasting change while focusing on investing in place-based solutions that address systemic barriers to nonprofit organizations’ ability to meet their missions.
