This month, we’re excited to spotlight Stephanie, one of our incredible George Mason University interns, who has been making a meaningful impact in our Youth Education Program.
What inspired you to volunteer with Community Lodgings?
“I’ve always been passionate about working with children, and as a social work student, I wanted hands‑on experience supporting youth both academically and emotionally. Community Lodgings stood out because of its commitment to empowering families and providing educational support in underserved communities.”
A memorable moment with the students:
“One of the most rewarding moments was watching a quiet student begin to open up. They started participating more and even asked for help when they needed it. Seeing that growth — and knowing I helped create a safe, supportive space — meant so much to me.”
What this experience has taught you:
“I didn’t expect to learn just how resilient and adaptable the students are. Despite the challenges they face, they show up with energy and a willingness to learn.”
How volunteering has shaped future goals:
“This experience has strengthened my desire to work with children and families. It’s shown me the importance of trauma‑informed and culturally responsive care, and it’s boosted my confidence in building meaningful relationships with youth.”
