Javier’s Story
Javier* was in the first grade and unable to sound out words. He was at a critical point to establish the necessary foundation of reading to be able to learn in all subjects. Our Youth Education Program (YEP) staff recognized this and connected with his teacher to find a strategy that worked. YEP gave Javier the support and consistency he needed and he is now sounding out words, improving his writing, and is well on his way to reading comprehension! Javier is now in Summer Camp and gets the daily support he needs to prevent Summer learning loss.
YEP provides support to over 100 under-resourced students, like Javier, who all qualify for free and reduced-price lunch 
at school. Our programs provide academic resources to students who may not have the same advantages as their peers. Our goal is to help bridge the gap to ensure that our students achieve academic success.
