When Karla returned to the Community Lodgings Youth Education Program this year, staff were thrilled to welcome her back.
Now a ninth grader, Karla first joined the program as an elementary school student in 4th and 5th grade. After her family moved farther away, attending the program became difficult, and she had to step away during middle school. But when she moved back to the neighborhood this year, she immediately asked to rejoin.
Karla brings a contagious positivity to the classroom. While many high school students are naturally quiet or hesitant to speak up, Karla’s friendly and outgoing personality helps others feel comfortable. She is often the first to greet someone new, raise her hand, or start a conversation—small actions that make a big difference for students who may feel shy.
Her enthusiasm extends beyond the program. Karla is involved in her church choir and youth group, where she sometimes speaks in front of the congregation. She also participates in Virginia Tech’s drone soccer program and was recently accepted into the Academy of Finance at her school.
Karla dreams of becoming a cardiologist one day, and she is already working hard toward that goal. She takes challenging honors courses and plans to take summer classes so she can fit even more advanced science opportunities into her schedule. When she encounters challenges—like a demanding English class—she meets regularly with her teacher and stays after school to get extra help.
Despite her busy schedule, Karla shows up early to the Youth Education Program, eager to participate and support her peers.
Students like Karla remind us how powerful a supportive learning community can be. Her kindness, determination, and leadership help create a space where every student feels welcome.
We’re so grateful to have Karla back in the program!
Keep up the great work, Karla! We’re cheering you on.
